Pitts Joins Bill to Honor the Freedom Riders
Today, Congressman Joe Pitts (R-PA) announced his support for legislation that would award the Freedom Riders with the Congressional Gold Medal. The measure, to be introduced by Congressman Hank Johnson (D-GA), honors the men and women who protested segregated bus and other services in the 1960s.
Congressman Pitts’ statement follows:
“As we mark Black History Month this year, I’ve joined an effort to honor the Freedom Riders who bravely fought segregation more than 50 years ago. My colleague John Lewis was among the first of these men and women who had the courage to expose prejudice in the interstate bus system.
